….that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” I think when Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote that, he was also thinking of all the Scottish, green ogres and ogresses out there. Ah, true love. Amen!
Not to detract from the cuteness of this… But, his ear things should be lower.
The documentary of the wedding is soon to be released; watch for “My big fat Geek Wedding”.
I bet the children attending it thought it was the best wedding ever in the entire universe.

MLK said: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
Which, if you think about it, really relates much better to the whole Shrek theme, all grave-spinning by slain civil rights leaders aside.

1. It says right in the caption MLK wrote it, which is wrong.
2. When you use a quote you quote the person who originally said it. You don’t quote someone else who quoted it.
3. Attributing the quote to MLK because he quoted it is just as bad as if I attributed it to haley eaton because she quoted the post quoting MLK quoting the Declaration of Independence.

I think your definition of a “direct quote” is what’s wonky here, because a “direct quote” would require attribution to the original source — cited directly to its origins, rather than to one of the many people who have referenced the US Declaration of Independence since its conception.
While it is widely known that Dr. King did, in fact, say the quotation in question, he was not the one to “write” it, as stated by the caption of this image; those cookies belong to Thomas Jefferson.
Of course, such mistakes are really no big deal in this informal setting, but I figured it would be a good idea to set the record straight to help you avoid making them when misattributing your sources really could become an issue.
